#144 - Bahamut is Scary

Press [Noise]

Back in the rant gang, making some noise in the universe. Validity of flow in those who hear? Not exactly. Minding oneself in the eyes of others, though actions true and true are consistent regardless of public view.

If you’re having trouble with your G3/G4 based iBook or Macintosh Desktop, consider reinstalling your OS and forgoing Security Update 2007-008. Having been through four installs since the initial update, I am satisfied that all of my stability issues can be linked to this update.

Is this an attempt to force an upgrade? Is Apple above such sabotage? In 1995 they had a testing lab containing every supported Macintosh so they could ensure that they gave the appropriate experience. Naturally, we knew enough not to install certain patches on some of the older machines simply for the sake of sanity.

My iBook is finally reliable again, now that I have followed the above procedure. Back to the lab for a moment… I haven’t heard that it was maintained, and I’ve said this before - Apple is pushing hard to remove PPC computers from their support line up. I don’t believe for an instant it’s a mistake that mine became so unstable with this patch. Nothing in software is an error that can’t be corrected - it just isn’t done.

“If builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization.”

I was right about the Intel move - saw it coming years before. I’ll make another prediction - rather, I’ll reassert it: Apple will continue to aggressively pull support for their PowerPC based computers. Think I’m crazy? How well do they run in comparison to their Intel counterparts? How much faster are the new Intels really?

With Intel’s lack of consumer-level 64bit support and the Gigahertz myth firmly debunked, Apple’s only saving grace is the sluggish rate at which they adopt new technologies. It does allow them to charge the most for the lowest. Granted they put to this hardware to it’s arguable “best and most efficient” use.

We’re hitting the ceiling… no. We’ve hit the performance ceiling. Hardware is nigh at it’s limit - able to render beyond sight and care. Now software engineers are seeking an increase in the performance spectrum. What can they possible spend instructions on next?

Accelerate physics! Whoops, no good. Graphics! Doin’ fine, doin’ just dandy. Well well, what now? Consequences! Isn’t it the least bit ironic that gamers are seeking to fulfill the lack of physical dynamics and thus consequences of reality in their escape of it? Better than the real thing, eh Bono?

There was never any doubt about that.

I guarantee, that if quantum processors are viable to the consumer in any fair shake, hardware engineers will find the excuse to bring them to market. Just watch, kids, and don’t make me say I told you so. The truth speaks for itself… and I have stopped worrying long ago when people would listen to me.

Ta for now.
