#145 - Sure as a Sniper
Press [Noise]
Day Two
So far so good - iBook runs like a top, and my nose joins in after I step in from the cold. Near as I can tell that’s normal. For those of you who have be told that’s a joke, go watch more Looney Toons. I will openly admit Bugs Bunny continues to be one of my all-time heros.
It occurred to me that I was not clear enough about some facts surrounding the instability of my iBook. First, it is a trundle-hard PowerPC G3/600, half a gig of ram, Radeon 16MB video, and a smaller hard drive than you can get on some USB keys these days.
Further, I was not the only one to have a catastrophic failure of computer after the installation of Security Update 008-07. I frantically hit Apple discussion boards and discovered that unless you sound like you love the platform, you won’t be heard. Go ahead - test the theory, I happen to be a fan.
Just not a blind one.
One thread on the topic met with the usual suspects; reboot? No go. PRAM reset? Nada. I seemed to be fortunate with 80% of the victims suffering immediate hardware deathblows. Not very ninja if you ask me.
Now remember the rule: For every one complaint answers one thousand voices. That’s about 10,000 people who found themselves in the drink without even a towel when they scrambled to shore. I don’t care who you are, foul play is foul play. There’s an important aspect to this interplay I want to emphasize:
This is equivalent to shoving a rag in a car’s engine cylinder and wondering why the blasted thing won’t run right.
“Shucks. Well, sir, we got this shiny new coup in the yard for ya… cheap.”
Catch my drift? A friend of mine and I agreed that not enough people care to notice this sabotage has being going on since the mid-80s. With so much hardware to sell, is it any wonder? To me it just reeks of bad Apples, but who the heck wants to buy Vista?
Truth is, we’re used to being kicked in the head routinely, we’ve even stopped complaining. Most of us, anyway. Is it true we’d rather get what we want than have to learn to cope with challenges and growth? If the ADHD movement is any indication, this world is in a lot of trouble.
There’s one thing I’ll never do to you - I won’t call the kettle black if it is indeed white. That’s my promise to you.
Ta for now.
