#146: Fudgebuckets
Press [Influence]
Influences in the circle of youth, seven and a half sins of cold, and half a pound of mercy. Travails justify inhuman choices? “N’hardly!” What brought me to this page?
I believe that people who read Steven King are one of just a few. They seek some form of similar experience, even perhaps resolution they cannot find or create, have a dark memory they wish not to know. We fight battles that have not had an answer yet in our lives, futile though they may be.
That is to say we may not even want the answer; the battle may be enough. We dive into horrific tales with clear purpose, even if it is latent. Anyone who knows anything about psychology… well, I don’t suppose everyone agrees on that topic.
In high school I became temporarily interested in the positronic tales by Issac Asimov. The three laws and how they might be distorted or shattered still fascinate me, and some of my own robots have them. Buddy? Surely not - but there is a timeline my heros may venture into that habours these uncertain creatures.
Give us barriers; some will respect, others will study, test, and even break. What are our limits? Are we willing to accept them? Should we? The exastentialst answer seems the only reason to push on in times such as this. However, it’s not the answer, and yes - fantasy, horror, science - fiction in fine, is arguably one of the safest ways to explore one’s ideas.
Robots held a limited interest to me, their qualities were known, in fact predefined by their creators. Even something so unpredictable as a plot twist glinted it’s sharp eye from such a distance as to prompt close of page well before the first Act had ended. I grew bored. Lent volumes such as Christine and , human character writing quickly lay hold upon me, never to let go.
Since then it has been the pursuit of character. What gives one voice on a page? When I decide, Bahamut will become upset by Shiva’s request only to be pacified by a treat, I discover instead that he is annoyed by underestimation. He is quite eager to overturn his student, and prove what loyalty means, just as a Lord might.
When you let go of the leash seeking the incredible jump, some allowances must be made. However, there is a fence beyond, and it shall not be breached. A quick example would be the matter of profanity. There have been censored instances of very soft language, but it is in my opinion not the best use of my creative wit.
Nor is it very entertaining. That is after all my goal. Dramatic twists lay in wait, but they will always be assisted by phrases such as “Noodle notes!” Why? Levity at the expense of others is increasing, and I refuse to contribute. There are more intelligent method of obtaining chuckles.
Anyone can insult - there’s no skill in it. The brightest and best comedians know that; they must have broad humour else they be eclipsed. Intelligence in the end is the defining feature of our society’s finest comedians.
When people say comedy is the most challenging form of entertainment to pursue, they’re not just pulling your chain or looking for an excuse. Try it, you’ll see what I mean. In the mean time, Press ESC will plod on, and so will the influences I bear with me.
Ta for now.
